General View of the Walls of Montezuma
Montezuma Castle National Monument, Arizona

Sinagua Indian farmers began constructing the first few rooms on this cliff beside Beaver Creek in the early 1100s.  The five story, twenty room cliff dwelling seen today was the result of almost a century of expansion.  The ruins of what had been an even larger pueblo stand nearby at the base of the cliff, but it has not fared nearly as well as its neighbor.  Photograph taken in 1991 by Howard J. Partridge.
