North Half of Agate House Ruin
Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona

This 11-13th century Anasazi dwelling stands on a windswept knoll that overlooks a vast and arid landscape.  The inhabitants would have had a clear view of anyone or anything approaching for miles.  Photograph taken in 1991 by Howard J. Partridge.
