Pratt - Thomas House in Berkeley, California

John Hudson Thomas was the architect of this highly stylized home, built in 1911.  It shows a relatively rare example of the influence that Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the Viennese Secessionists exerted on some American architects.  Not many took their work quite so literally as Thomas did here, who may have thought it a kind of academic exercise.  Note the splayed foundation in this view, giving the impression that the house is firmly anchored to the surrounding landscape, even when clinging to a steep hill.  Photograph taken in 1999 by Howard J. Partridge.
