St. John's Episcopal Church (page 2 of 3)
North Elevation This side view of Ernest Coxhead's 1891 church shows the transept and bell tower. The uninterrupted horizontal band of louvers that wrap around the tower is an exceptionally creative, clever, and surprisingly modern interpretation of the Victorian roof cornice. The design helps blur the edges between the tower walls and its roof, visually reducing the height and calming the building's overall design. This might be more obvious had the roof retained its original, more heavily textured, wood shingles. Photograph taken in 2000 by Howard J. Partridge.
