Ernest Coxhead was no stranger to Baroque detailing, as this
dramatic entrance attests. He often juxtaposed exaggerated classical
details against an otherwise sedate, often plain, and occasionally rustic
composition in the most original and tongue-in-cheek manner. In
this design, the Lutyenesque entrance is more than grand enough to make up
for its somewhat undignified relegation to a steeply sloping side
street. The location allowed Coxhead develop an internal layout that
could take advantage of the views toward the city of San Francisco
and its bay to the north, and the park to the south. Photo taken in
