California State Capitol Building (interior page 4 of 8)
California State Seal in Stained Glass Architects Albert Sutton and Charles Peter Weeks of San Francisco were the artists of this 1907-08 art glass light fixture, one of a matching pair that grace the ceiling of the capitol's second floor hall. It is an interpretation of a 1849 state seal design by Major Robert Sheldon Garnett of the U.S. Army. The idyllic composition of mountains meeting water includes; Minerva, the Roman goddess of Wisdom, with a grizzly bear beside her, and grapes at her feet; a gold miner; the word "Eureka" (I have found it!), the state motto; and stars representing California as the 31st state admitted to the Union. Photograph by Howard J. Partridge taken in April, 2006.
