Weber and Porter Houses (page 4 of 4)

Rear view of an exceptional row of Shingle Style buildings. Photo by Howard J. Partridge.

Oblique Rear (North) Elevation
Julius Rehn Weber and Bruce & Robert Porter Houses
San Francisco, California

Designed by Ernest Coxhead, the back of these Shingle Style rowhouses display a considerably more informal composition than their fronts might suggest.  The exposed drainage and plumbing pipes certainly add to the effect, a solution that seems particularly English in its approach.  Coxhead had immigrated as a talented young architect from England, after all.  In this view, Weber's 1902 house is mostly left of center with its reddish brown shingles.  Porter's 1904 house is next to it on the right with much darker shingles.  Photograph taken in 2001 by Howard J. Partridge.
